My baby hates to be on their tummy. Why it is so important to do tummy time?I was told it is fine if my baby does not crawl so does it really matter?
Great question! I actually love this question as a pediatric physical therapist I have seen the changes over the last 20 years. The "back to sleep" campaign came out in 1992 to decrease SIDS and it was successful. At the same time, there was a huge increase in cranial deformation and diagnosis of Torticollis in babies.. Almost half of all infants have some degree of plagiocephaly since the "Back to Sleep" campaign. Tummy time can directly decrease plagiocephaly as well as increase upper extremity strength, eye-hand mobility and assist with integrating primitive reflexes. A child first starts to roll in and out of tummy time as the first means of mobility. This teaches the baby they can move leading to exploration of their environment. A child generally to crawl between 8 to 10 months. Research has shown that baby crawling increases hand-eye coordination, gross and fine motor skills balance, and overall strength.
